Check you're eligible
Think you could be owed a tax refund for the 2016/17 tax year? Check the criteria below and register for myIR if you haven't already.
You'll then be able to sort it all online.
Select the statements that apply to you to find out if you’re owed a tax refund.
- I only worked part of the year - this includes recent retirees
- I’ve had more than one job in the last year
- I earned less than $48,000 in the last year
- None of these apply to me
You might be eligible for a refund. No one including third parties, can start the tax refund process until mid-May. You can prepare by registering for a myIR account, which lets you manage all your Inland Revenue matters securely online.
If you already have a myIR account, now’s a great time to log in and make sure your details are up to date.
After that, you can come back mid-May and complete step 2 to get the ball rolling.
It doesn’t look like you’re eligible for a refund. If you think you‘re due a refund, check if you’re eligible again from mid-May, when step 2 is available.
Calculate and request
If you think you’re due a refund based on step 1 – from mid-May you can check using our no-obligation calculator.
If the calculator shows you could be due a refund, go ahead and request your 2016/17 personal tax summary (PTS) in your myIR account. A PTS is a summary of your income and tax details for the year that confirms your refund and account details. We will be issuing 2016/2017 PTSs from mid-June 2017.
On your PTS, tick the declaration box then select ‘confirm your request’.
After that, come back mid-June to confirm your PTS and submit your refund request.
Confirm and collect
If you’ve completed steps 1 and 2 your PTS will be ready to confirm in your myIR account from mid-June. Don’t worry - it’s not too late to complete steps 1 and 2 if you haven’t already.
At this point you'll need to:
- log into your myIR account and use your PTS confirmation checklist to confirm each part of your PTS is correct
- check your bank account details so we know where to refund your money
Select 'Send to Inland Revenue' and you'll receive your refund within five working days.
