As a builder your reputation's everything, you want your name to be strong. Um, doing cash jobs can potentially undermine that because it comes with the word cheap, and cheap's not often associated with good.

I've got a steady job, so doing something illegal for no real gain for me is ... not worth it to me.

The misconception around the small job being okay because it's not that one big job – it's false. Because the small jobs eventually add up to that big job.

It's a rip-off to society and you see the people getting caught.

IRD have a lot of resources at their disposal, they're always looking out for these sorts of things. It's fraud.

If I don't declare all of my income during the year, when I go to the bank and try and get a loan it's going to be a lot more difficult as the money I think I've earned for the year…the bank doesn't see it the same way.

There're always consequences to doing cashies and for the consumer it's going to mean you don't have any evidence that that work was carried out.

I have been tempted to do cash jobs in the past…um, it's..it's a tempting idea. It's cash straight in your hand, but at the end of the day it's not worth the risk getting caught.

There's nothing wrong with doing a cash job. It's just up to the tradie to declare that cash as part of his income and pay the appropriate tax on it.
